Destinations Podcast: Morocco

Published

July 23, 2018

From the ancient folk music of the Berber mountain communities, to the Arab-Andalusian music of the cities and the roots-fusion, music is one of the most powerful forms of expression in Morocco's culture. The music of Morocco is as diverse and as culturally rich as its people. Styles vary from region to region and are greatly influenced by the region's ethnic groups and cultural heritage. Depending the region, one could find the classical Arab-Andalusian music, the folk music of the Berber people, Gnawa and the popular music styles of Rai and Chaabi.

This mixtape is a journey through contemporary Gnawa trance music, sufi ancient trance music and cassette recordings of Rai and Chaabi from the '70s and '80s.
